Mr. Rogers taught me that adults could be caring (besides my grandma, whom I was lucky to visit almost weekly). Sesame Street taught me that my being different wasn't just okay; it should be celebrated. And Reading Rainbow taught me that there was a way to escape, for real and imaginary, a world of pain and abuse. To get rid of Public Television is beyond disheartening. It is yet another way to attack those of us in the US who are despised by the rich and powerful because there is not a hole in our hearts that can not be filled.
Sesame Street was the earliest TV show I can remember, and so near and dear to my childhood memories. It was mesmerizing in such a positive way- teaching letters, numbers, and some Spanish language while allowing me to feel compassion for a “big bird” with a kind heart. The wealth of good that it imparted to my young soul over 50 years ago rings true now and I know that our culture would be worse off without this amazing resource engaging and educating children. This should never be revoked for some billionaire to have a larger profit margin!! Sharing love, empathy, and positive education with our developing youth should be the highest priority of a nation that values civic-minded adults who productively contribute to society.
